Thanks, robert k. There seem to be two polarized camps on the subject of QR codes: one camp thinks they're awesome, and one camp thinks they're utterly useless. Neither camp is right. Like any other vehicle, QR codes are only as good as the thought (and content strategy) behind them.

I didn't mention this in the post, but what do you think of SnapTags vs. traditional QR codes?

Good post Andrew. I respect your bravery in broaching the subject of QR codes (thus risking your 'digital marketing cred'). The problem isn't with QR codes - it's with poor implementations, poor audience understanding, & trendy marketing people treating them as punch lines. I share your excitement about NFC - but it'll be cost prohibitive for many clients - and potentially a huge turnoff for consumers (just imagine the 1st wave of intrusive implementations)!

In a world not controlled by terrible marketing.. QR codes can still serve as a gateway for users, who intrigued by an idea, desire deeper understanding before making their move. Despite my cynicism, I'm one of those people! I enjoy browsing books in the library by authors I've never heard of. I scan the codes - & then use the info (details + reviews) to bring home titles I never would have considered (I suspect I'm not the only guy this model would work for)..

I won't even get into all of the companies now tweaking bar codes to corrupt readers.. that's for another day and another blog for you to tackle..
